Wait... You’re an OT? But You Don’t Do Therapy?

April is Occupational Therapy (OT) Month—a time to celebrate the diverse roles and contributions of OTs. While I no longer provide traditional therapy sessions, my journey as an occupational therapist deeply influences the work I do today through qualOT of life.

From Personal Experience to Professional Calling

My path to occupational therapy began unexpectedly at age 15. After my mom underwent rotator cuff surgery and my dad broke both wrists in a four-wheeler accident, I became their primary caregiver. Driving them to therapy appointments, I was introduced to the world of OT and was captivated by its blend of art and science aimed at restoring quality of life after injury or illness. This experience ignited a passion that led me to pursue a career in occupational therapy.

Bridging the Gaps in Healthcare

After years of working in inpatient rehabilitation and assisted living facilities, I noticed a troubling pattern: patients often lacked support once they returned home; from the hospital or the doctor’s office. Navigating the complex healthcare system and managing personal health became overwhelming tasks, especially for aging adults. Recognizing this gap, I founded qualOT of life to provide personalized healthcare coordination, advocacy, and aging-in-place solutions.

Applying OT Principles Beyond Traditional Settings

Though I don't offer conventional therapy sessions, the core principles of OT are integral to my approach:

  • Empowerment: Helping clients take control of their health and daily routines.

  • Holistic Care: Considering the physical, emotional, and environmental factors affecting well-being.

  • Functionality: Focusing on practical solutions that enhance daily living and independence.

At qualOT of life, these principles guide our services, from coordinating care plans to implementing home modifications that support safe and independent living.

Redefining OT in the Community

Occupational therapy isn't confined to hospitals or clinics; it's about enabling individuals to live their best lives. By extending OT principles into community-based services, qualOT of life helps clients navigate healthcare challenges, advocate for their needs, and maintain independence as they age.
